How much can I spend today? Working out a daily spending limit

Your safe-to-spend amount for today is: money available until next payday, minus bills still due before then, minus the savings you plan to keep, divided by the days left until payday. Recalculate it each day — spending less today raises tomorrow's figure, spending more lowers it.

How do you calculate a daily spending limit?

  1. Start with money available now.
  2. Subtract bills due before your next payday.
  3. Subtract this period's savings target.
  4. Divide by the days until payday.

What does a daily spending limit look like?

1,200 available, 450 of bills still due, 150 savings target, 10 days to payday: (1,200 − 450 − 150) ÷ 10 = 60 safe to spend per day.

Why does a daily spending number work?

Monthly budgets are abstract — it is hard to feel whether 400 for groceries is going well on the 12th. A single daily figure answers the real question at the moment you are about to spend.

Questions

Is there an app that just tells me how much I can spend today?

Yes. Money Manager shows a 'Safe to spend today' figure on its home screen, worked out from your balances, upcoming bills and savings target.

Should I include savings in the daily limit?

Take savings out first, so the daily figure is money you can genuinely spend.

What if I overspend one day?

Nothing breaks — the remaining days simply get a slightly lower limit.
