Which QR code reader should you use? What to look for and what to avoid

For most people the phone's own camera is enough: it's free, has no ads and shows the link before opening it. A dedicated reader is worth installing only if it does more: it checks links for scam signs, reveals where short links go, reads codes from photos and keeps your history on your device. Avoid readers full of ads, ones that ask for permissions a scanner doesn't need, and ones whose privacy label says your data is used to track you.

Do you need an app at all?

Probably not, if you only scan now and then. The iPhone camera, Google Lens on Android and the Windows Camera app all read QR codes without installing anything.

What makes a good QR reader?

What are the red flags in a QR reader app?

How do you check an app before installing it?

  1. On the App Store, read the App Privacy section: look for “Data Used to Track You” and “Data Linked to You”.
  2. Check who the developer is and when the app was last updated.
  3. Read recent reviews for complaints about ads or surprise charges.
  4. After installing, allow only the camera, and photos if you want to scan pictures.

Questions

Is the iPhone camera a safe QR reader?

Yes. It shows the address in a banner before opening anything. It doesn't check the link for scam signs, so read the address yourself.

Are free QR reader apps safe?

Many are, but free apps often pay for themselves with ads or data. Check the privacy label and the permissions before you install one.

Is there a QR reader without ads?

Yes. Your phone's built-in camera has none, and some apps, Qanary among them, have no ads either. The App Store privacy label shows whether an app tracks you.
