QR code not scanning? How to fix it on any phone
Most QR codes that won't scan are too close, too dark, reflective or out of focus. Move back until the whole code and its white border fill about half the screen, wipe the lens, add light, tilt to remove glare and hold still for two seconds. If the camera still doesn't react, check that code scanning is switched on, or try Google Lens or the iPhone Code Scanner. Some codes are simply damaged, too small or low in contrast, and a sticker over another code may be a scam rather than a bad print.

What are the quick fixes?
- Move back until the whole code, with its white border, fills about half the screen.
- Wipe the camera lens.
- Add light, and tilt the phone to remove glare or reflections.
- Hold still for two seconds so the camera can focus.
- Zoom out or step back: a code that is too close stays blurry.
Is code scanning switched on?
- iPhone: check that Scan QR Codes is on in Settings > Camera, or use the Code Scanner in Control Center.
- Android: if the camera app doesn't react, open Google Lens instead. Some camera apps have a separate scan mode or a setting to switch on.
- Computer: use the Barcode mode in the Windows Camera app, or open the code on screen and scan it with your phone.
When is the problem the code itself?
- It is damaged, creased, wet or partly covered.
- It is too small or printed at low resolution.
- The contrast is low, or the colours are inverted (a light code on a dark background), which some readers can't handle.
- It is on a screen that is too dim: turn up the brightness, or take a screenshot and scan that instead.
- It is a sticker on top of another code. That may be a scam, not just a bad print.
What if it scans but nothing opens?
Some codes hold plain text, Wi-Fi details or a contact rather than a web link, so there is no page to open.
If it is a link and the page won't load, the link may be broken or expired, or it may have been taken down because it was a scam. Don't keep retrying a code you're unsure about.
Questions
Why does my phone scan some QR codes but not others?
The ones that fail are usually small, damaged, low in contrast or inverted. Better light, a steady hand and a little more distance fix most of them.
Can a QR code expire?
The printed pattern doesn't, but the link inside can. Some QR services can switch a code off, and event or payment codes are often valid only for a limited time.
